This print shows the sunset lighting looking across the Duddon Estuary, from the Sandscale Haws Nature Reserve, Cumbria, England. The southwestern Lakeland fells can be seen, notably Black Combe which famous for being ‘not quite a mountain’. At 1970ft it falls just 30 feet short. The nature reserve is managed by the National Trust and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Almost out of shot to the right of the picture is the village of Askam-in-Furness. The long pier stretching out into the estuary is a remnant of the village’s iron industry. It is made of slag and many of the dunes nearby are formed from waste heaps. What was once an industrial area is now a haven for nature and its fauna and flora have earned its designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
