The smallest Grebe, the Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) is less than a foot long. Typically it is 9 to 11 inches long (about 23 to 29 cm) and dumpy in appearance with a fluffy tail. The Little Grebe lives in small lakes where it breeds along the edges or even in nearby ditches. Not usually seen flying, it will often dive to escape danger. It feeds on water snails, insects, larvae and small fish.
