Daffodil Bud
Daffodil Bud

This shot of a daffodil bud was taken in a country park some time ago. It is a shot that always makes me think of Spring with a real emphasis on change, new growth and the promise of warm summer sunshine to come. Daffodils, also known as narcissus and jonquil, are part of the Amaryllidaceae family. Named after the vain hunter Narcissus from Greek mythology, the Daffodils in the UK spread from Spain and Portugal. The first record of a Daffodil the Netherlands was in 1662. They are tied up with folklore in other ways. They are the national flower of Wales where they grow in abundance in the wild. William Wordsworth made them famous in his most famous poem, The Daffodil, from which I offer an extract here;
The Daffodil
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
