Sitting astride the western entrance to the Maida Hill Tunnel, Cafe Laville has a commanding position offering excellent views along the Regent’s Canal towards Little Venice. The cafe is a well known landmark in the St John’s Wood region of London. The tunnel over which it stands is 249m long and has no towpath. It was opened in 1816, before power boats were available. The crew had to ‘leg’ the boats through by laying on planks across the boats and walk the boats using their feet on the arched roof of the tunnel.
