This Robin in the series British Garden Birds series is the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula). A favourite on Christmas cards, Robins are found throughout the UK and are unusual in that they sing throughout the year. Like other garden birds they thrive in woodland margins, hedgerows and parks. They are fiercely territorial and a pair will defend their joint summer territory. In winter they have individual territories.

December 21st is National Robin Day. It was started by the Songbird Survival charity. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by birds and all other wildlife during the winter.

Robins are a great example of why birds can be more frequently seen in winter. Not only are they out searching for food and they are exposed because of lack of foliage but our native birds are joined by those from the colder parts of Europe searching for more easily available food.

Feeders in our gardens can be a great help and make for great opportunities to watch birds. I love seeing birds in the garden and use my binoculars much more than my camera. I keep my camera available however. This picture was taken in a friend’s garden in Sussex.
